Modern Foreign Languages - French - Madame Ward - Bespoke

Languages

At Otterham Primary School, we learn French as our Modern Foreign Language, in order to provide an opening to other cultures. We aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching of French provides opportunities for children to learn new ways of thinking, and to communicate for practical purposes. We want children to be able to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

Our Reception and KS1 children develop the foundations of learning language, from learning to listen to and repeat sounds in daily phonics, to enjoying rhymes and songs, and answering the register in different languages. Wendy Ward, a language specialist from Sir James Smith's, works closely with our staff to help plan and deliver the KS2 French.  From Year 3 and above, pupils have weekly French lessons of 30 minutes.  In addition to this, they practise key vocabulary through the week, between their weekly lesson.

Here is the scheme of work for 2022-23

French with Madame Ward

Weekly lessons with Madame Ward - a language specialist from Sir James Smith's School teaches French to our Key Stage 2 classes.  For most of the lesson, only French is spoken.  The children enjoy learning through song, physical activities, games and conversation.

How do we learn language?

Building Vocabulary

Key vocabulary learnt in Years 3 and 4 includes numbers and colours.  Learning these key words also includes learning all of the French sounds in the language!

Children learn through repetition, with actions and pictures.  As the children progress, they will then repeat and consolidate this vocabulary in future topics, alongside the new vocabulary they will be learning.

Experience - La France

As well as learning a love for foreign language, we aim to develop curiosity about, and an understanding of, other countries and their cultures.  In this cross-curricular topic, we sampled French food, and learned about the history and geography of  France, looking at significant dates such as Bastille Day, and exploring French landmarks.  Here we see pupils building their very own Eiffel Tower using spaghetti and marshmallows!
